Consumer service terms
A clear scope, a complete price and honest evidence.
These terms apply to a Known Again family-history research service commissioned by a UK consumer through the website or by email.
Version 2.0 · effective 16 September 2026
These terms apply to new proposals issued under this version. Existing accepted commissions keep their agreed price, scope and terms. Previously issued written proposals remain available on their stated terms until their original expiry; this update does not reprice them. Archived version 1.0 — 20 August 2026.
01 / Who the contract is with
Known Again is operated by Nick James.
Known Again is the trading name of Nick James, a sole trader. In these terms, “Known Again”, “we”, “us” and “our” mean Nick James, a sole trader trading as Known Again.
- Website: knownagain.co.uk
- Email: nick@knownagain.co.uk
- Business, correspondence, complaints and service address: Nick James trading as Known Again, c/o SIU Offices, 4–6 Greatorex Street, London E1 5NF, United Kingdom
We provide these terms and your project-specific proposal in a form you can save before you are asked to make a payment.
02 / Assessment and proposal
Your enquiry is free and does not create a paid contract.
The free assessment considers whether the starting information suggests a worthwhile research route. It does not include record searches, prove the family account or produce a report.
If we recommend paid work, we send a written proposal identifying one question or ancestral line, the period and geography, the sources and research routes included, important exclusions and risks, the deliverables, planned start, early-update date, delivery date, complete price, payment method and any genuinely optional external purchase.
When the contract is made
The proposal is our offer and states how long it remains open. A paid contract is made when, while the proposal remains open, you accept it and these terms in writing and we receive the first instalment. We then send the accepted proposal, these versioned terms, the payment receipt and the model cancellation form in a form you can keep. A change is binding only when both sides agree it in writing.
Acceptance wording: I accept proposal KA-[reference] and the Known Again Consumer Service Terms version 2.0 dated 16 September 2026. I understand that the total price is £695: £347.50 now and £347.50 when the report is ready, before delivery.
03 / Scope and price
The Family Story Investigation is £695 total.
Known Again is not VAT registered, so no VAT is added. The price includes everything required to deliver the scope in your accepted proposal:
- one clearly defined historical person, event, photograph, relationship, account or family question;
- research and analysis of the sources and routes set out in the accepted proposal, within its agreed period, geography and boundaries;
- the standard online record access needed for the agreed route;
- a sourced PDF report, a one-page family summary, a relationship diagram or timeline where useful, and permitted record copies where licensing allows;
- an early progress update on the date in your proposal, explaining work completed, findings or limits, and the next direction; and
- one follow-up by email or a call of up to 30 minutes to clarify the report.
The fixed fee is for the agreed investigation and deliverables, not a promised number of research hours, generations or discoveries. The investigation is complete when the agreed research routes have been examined or their unavailability explained, and the report, summary and agreed follow-up have been supplied. The report records what was checked, what the evidence supports, unresolved points and useful next steps. An unresolved answer does not excuse missing agreed work. We do not extend the scope or charge for additional work without a separate written agreement.
No compulsory surprise costs
We do not add a mandatory fee after you commission the work. A certificate, archive reproduction, translation, travel or specialist service can be offered only as a genuinely optional addition with its exact price or calculation explained first. It is not ordered or charged unless you expressly approve it in writing. If something is essential to the agreed scope, it must be included in the proposal’s complete total before the contract is made.
Broader, international, archive-intensive, DNA, living-person tracing or follow-on work needs a separate written scope and price.
04 / Payment and timing
Payment follows two service milestones.
- £347.50 is due when you commission the accepted scope.
- £347.50 is due when we tell you the report is ready, before the full report is released.
The two-stage schedule does not change the £695 total. The first instalment is a part-payment, not an automatically non-refundable deposit. The proposal or invoice states the payment method and due date before the contract is made.
We perform the service by the delivery date in the proposal. The date runs from the planned start and assumes that requested starting information is supplied on time. If a provider delay, inaccessible record or necessary clarification materially affects it, we explain the reason and agree a fair revised date. We may pause work after giving reasonable notice if an agreed payment is overdue.
05 / Cancellation
You normally have 14 days to change your mind.
You may cancel without giving a reason during the 14 days after the day the contract is made. Email nick@knownagain.co.uk, write to the address above or use the model cancellation form. A clear statement sent before the period ends is enough.
If you have not asked us to start during that period, we return every payment without undue delay and within 14 days of receiving the cancellation. We use the original payment method unless you expressly agree otherwise and do not charge a refund fee.
If you want research to start within 14 days
Accepting these terms is not an early-start request. You must separately and expressly send or select both of these statements:
I expressly request Known Again to begin the research during the 14-day cancellation period. I understand that, if I cancel during that period, I must pay a proportionate amount for work already performed.
I understand that I lose the statutory right to cancel once the service has been fully performed.
If you cancel after requesting an early start but before completion, we charge only a proportionate amount for work actually supplied, calculated at no more than £49.50 per recorded hour of human professional work. Unattended AI processing is not counted as human work. An optional external purchase is charged only to the extent it has already been supplied and consumer law permits that charge. The total will never exceed the agreed contract price or the proportionate amount legally payable. We return the remainder of your payment within 14 days.
If you do not expressly request an early start, paid research begins after the cancellation period ends. After that period, you can still ask us to stop; we limit avoidable loss and charge only a fair amount for work already supplied. Any optional external purchase is charged only to the extent already supplied and consumer law permits.
06 / Research and delivery
Historical evidence can produce a clear limit as well as an answer.
Records can be missing, closed, damaged, mistranscribed, inconsistent or about somebody else. We therefore cannot guarantee that a particular record exists, a person can be identified, a family account will be confirmed or every uncertainty will be resolved.
We do promise to carry out the agreed work with reasonable care and skill, test identity and chronology, cite the sources used and distinguish what is documented, strongly indicated and unresolved.
Research is AI-assisted: tools can help organise information, suggest routes, compare material and draft text. Nick James remains responsible for checking the evidence and citations, resolving or explaining contradictions, and approving the finished report. AI-generated text is not treated as a historical source or proof of a relationship. Our privacy notice explains the limits on sharing client material with these tools.
You agree to provide information you reasonably believe is accurate, identify uncertainty, send only material you are entitled to share and avoid sensitive or criminal-offence information about living people unless we have agreed a suitable route. Our standard service does not trace or contact living people.
The report is delivered by email or a private download method stated in the proposal. Tell us promptly if you believe agreed work is missing or there is an error; a review request within 14 days helps us investigate quickly but does not limit your statutory rights.
07 / Reports, rights and remedies
The report is for your personal and family use.
Known Again retains copyright in the original report wording and design. Once the full price is paid, you receive a permanent, non-exclusive licence to save, print and share the report privately with family for non-commercial use.
Archive images, newspaper material, database extracts and other third-party content remain subject to their owners’ rights and licence terms. A copy in a private report does not necessarily permit public or commercial republication. We do not use your question, material, report or recommendation in publicity without separate specific permission.
If the service does not conform to the contract, consumer law may entitle you to repeat performance at our cost or an appropriate price reduction. Nothing in these terms restricts statutory consumer rights or liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
We are responsible for reasonably foreseeable loss caused by our breach or lack of reasonable care and skill. The service is for private family use and is not professional legal, medical, immigration, inheritance or financial advice. We are not responsible for business loss or for a specialist decision made without the appropriate adviser.
08 / Complaints and law
Please tell Nick if something has gone wrong.
Email nick@knownagain.co.uk or write to the address above, quoting the project reference. We acknowledge a service complaint promptly and normally within two working days. We aim to provide a written outcome within ten working days. If that is not possible, we explain the reason, progress and expected response date.
The proposal identifies any alternative dispute resolution scheme that Known Again is legally or contractually required to use. We do not claim membership of a particular scheme in these terms. If a complaint cannot be resolved directly, we will consider in good faith whether a suitable accredited ADR process could help.
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere in the UK, you retain any mandatory consumer protection and right to bring proceedings available to you.
Personal information is handled as described in the privacy notice. If a court finds one part of these terms unlawful, the remaining parts continue to apply. A delay in enforcing a right does not waive it.
